Week 8 Summary

Week 8 is in the books and it was another topsy-turvy week in 1901. Pittsburgh and Boston remain atop of their respective leagues, but underneath them, there was a lot of churn as the other teams, especially those in the middle of the pack, took turns getting knocked down and then knocking down someone else. Eight weeks into the season means we are 33% of the way through the calendar, but both leagues sit at about 26% of their games played, so there is plenty of baseball remaining. 1901 Philadelphia Athletics In the AL, Boston is now seventh in hitting and fourth in pitching, but they somehow managed to expand their lead by two more games from last week. The remaining seven teams in the AL either went 4-6 or 5-5 for the week, but out of this mess both Chicago and Detroit, two of the better teams who have been stuck in a morass these past few weeks, began to show signs of coming to life. Both teams also have a quality pitcher that just rejoined the roster and I am dubious

Week 8 Results

Monday, June 3, 1901 As seen on the telegraph: Boston (AL) announced pitcher Ben Beville had been released to Lowell (New England League). Detroit announced first baseman Pop Dillon would likely miss the next two months after a fractured thumb landed him in the hospital. Philadelphia (AL) announced that right fielder Socks Seybold would temporarily be away from the team working out because he was too heavy, fat, and slow. Baltimore announced that outfielder Mike Donlin had returned from his suspension. Apparently Throwing a bat at an umpire evidently not considered too serious an infraction. Cleveland announced the acquisition of pitcher Pete Dowling , formerly with Milwaukee. Boston (NL) announced the acquisition of third baseman John Hinton . Philadelphia (NL) announced pitcher Happy Townsend from his undisclosed injury of 04/20/1901. Note: The Eastern teams of the NL begin their first western swing of the season today.   Washington 4 Chi

Week 7 Summary

Week 7 is in the books and the season has reached the month of June. The pennant races are still bunched up with a lot of churn seen in the middle of the pack, but Pittsburgh and Boston remain atop of the standings in their respective leagues. Each league still has two teams that haven’t reached the thirty games played mark yet, the two at the top in the AL and two of the three at the bottom in the NL. The AL has surpassed the NL in the number of games played, despite the NL getting a week head start on their new compatriots. Both leagues have started their eastern and western swings and at this point, the only teams that haven’t face each other yet are Baltimore and Cleveland, which will get fixed immediately when Week 8 commences. 1901 New York Ginats In the AL, Boston is fifth in the league in hitting and fourth in ERA, but thanks to Cy Young's 9-0 start and 0.89 ERA they enjoy a comfortable 4.5 game lead. Baltimore is second in the league in hitting and ERA and has man

Washington 8 Detroit (H) 3 Both teams scored twice in the first but then Washington starter Bill Carrick (5-2, 4.61) didn’t allow another Detroit run until two outs in the ninth. The Senators might have had problems scoring earlier in the season but today they were able to regain their early lead and continue to build on it versus Roscoe Miller (3-2, 3.61). Left fielder Pop Foster went 4-for-5 on the day and drove in two big runs for the visitors. Philadelphia (AL) 6 Milwaukee (H) 5 The Brewers led 4-1 after the second, but the Athletics tied the score at 4-4 with three in the top of the fifth.
