Roger's 1901 APBA Replay

I was intending to wait for the halfway point before delving into this, but I was asked questions about fielding and errors in the 1901 replay and at this point in the season I think there is more than enough data to pull some thoughts together on this topic. First of all, in these old seasons there just are a lot of errors. A lot of errors. Player batting cards from this ERA come with two error numbers to help account for that, but is it enough? After reviews of my final error numbers from my 1930 and 1949 replays, I determined it wasn't going to be, but for a BBW replay I really can’t change the boards, so I was limited to changing batting cards. Players were by on-base percentage and the lowest 50% of plate appearances were assigned a third error number. I tried to parcel these out such that each additional individual error number was represented on a per-team basis. Week 10 is in the books and both leagues are having interesting twists and turns as they approach the midpoint of the season. In the AL, Chicago was able to tie for first place with Boston for a day, but the Americans have proven to be tenacious and so far have refused to fully move out of the top spot. In the NL, it is Brooklyn and Pittsburgh that have taken to swapping out the position at the top of the standings. The highlight of the week was Pittsburgh's Jesse Tannehill throwing a perfect game versus Boston, but the Pirates couldn’t win the second game of that doubleheader and currently find themselves a half-game out of first. 1901 Pittsburgh Pirates As for the rest of the NL Brooklyn and Pittsburgh might want to keep an eye out for the hard-charging Philadelphia Phillies. Monday, June 17, 1901 As seen on the telegraph: Brooklyn announced the release of outfielder Lefty Davis . Davis was reportedly headed to Omaha (Western League). Boston (NL) announced that outfielder Daff Gammons would return to play following his finger injury of 06/05/1901. Chicago (AL) 8 Boston (AL) (H) 5 (GM 1) (10) In a battle of number one versus number two, the hard-charging White Stockings pulled off a come-from-behind victory in game #1 of the doubleheader. Chicago didn’t have a lead until the eigh5th, only to see Boston tie it back up in the bottom of the ninth. Chicago then scored four times in the top of the tenth, effectively putting the game out of reach for John Katoll (6-5, 3.41). Second baseman Sam Mertes had three RBI's on the day, including two on a two-out single that tied the score in the seventh inning.
