Week 23 Summary

Honus Wagner Week 23 is in the books and after several very busy weeks, this one was relatively slow with less than 40 games played. The action will pick back up in Week 24 as the AL finishes its season and the NL dwindles down to its final remaining games in Week 25. The White Stockings have a magic number of one, so their clinching of the AL pennant is pretty much inevitable, but Pittsburgh's magic number is still at ten as they just can't pull away from Brooklyn. Those two teams played two games this upcoming week, so if Brooklyn does want to make a move it will have its opportunity. Christy Mathewson There were 31 players and managers from the 1901 season that made the Hall-of-Fame (I apologize if I missed anyone) including two, Christy Mathewson and Honus Wagner , that went in as part of the inaugural class of 1936. Boston (NL) announced the acquisition of outfielder Joe Rickert from Worcester (Eastern League). Philadelphia (NL) announced that outfielder Roy Thomas would return to play following an undisclosed injury of 09/12/1901. Washington 6 Boston (AL) (H) 3 (GM 1) The Senators took Game One with the benefit of a three-run sixth and a good pitching outing from Casey Patten (8-19, 4.16). Washington shortstop Billy Clingman picked up three critical RBI's to push the visitors over the top.
