Week 15 Summary

Week 15 is in the books and what a difference a week makes. Last week ended with both leagues having multiple teams in close proximity to first place but this week ended with the league leaders enjoying a little breathing room.

1901 Cleveland Blues
In the AL, Chicago continues to play well and any stumble that second-place Boston makes is therefore somehow amplified, plus third-place Detroit, in the middle of a nine-game winning streak has drawn to within three games of second place. The Tigers knocked around the second division for most of the first half of the season but have suddenly had their pitching and hitting come together as they have made their charge up the standings. Baltimore is still holding on to fourth place, but their cracks are starting to show as they still have three starters disabled.

Pittsburgh now has a 5.5 game lead over Philadelphia as the Phillies and third place Brooklyn took turns knocking each other down in the standings this past week. Fourth place Boston will go as far as their pitching will take them, but they have won eight of their last ten and have climbed over the .500 mark and are hoping to not fall backward over the remainder of the season.

Cleveland Manager Jimmy McAleer
Nap Lajoie (.433) continues to lead the AL in hitting, just ahead of Sam Dungan (.399). Lajoie is not second in homeruns (10) behind Pop Foster (11), but Lajoie continues to lead in runs (69) and RBI's (84). John Anderson leads in hits (136) and doubles (41) over Lajoie (132 and 28)

In the NL, Kip Selbach (.393) has a slight lead over Jesse Burkett (.392) even though Burkett has a wide lead in hits (145). Ed Delahanty leads in runs (66) and RBI's (64), although both of these categories are quite tight. Bobby Wallace and Delahanty both have 24 doubles, and Burkett and Bill Dahlen both lead with seven homeruns.

A few more days and we will be in August, and even though the schedule does extend into October there are a lot of teams that have a lot of games left to play in the next two months. A quick glance at the upcoming shows that even Baltimore should be at the 80-games-played mark by the end of next week due to the inclusion of two doubleheaders.

1901 World Series and Finale

World Series Game One, Tuesday, October 8, 1901 The heat of the long hot Chicago summer had broken just in time for the commencement of the inaugural World Series and it was a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at South Side Park in Chicago. The home team, the Chicago White Stockings, had not played an official game in ten days, but were happy for the time off and were happy to have catcher Billy Sullivan back and able to play after his finger injury in the last week of the season plus pitcher Roy Patterson had rejoined the club after he had been allowed to return home before the end of the season. The visitors, the Pittsburgh Pirates, had just completed their regular season two days previous, but were happy for the day off on Monday and were ready to go as well. South Side Park, Chicago IL There was a concern as to whether this event would ever happen as both the leagues were still at war with each other, but both leagues, both teams, and the players all saw an opportunit...

Week 3 Summary

Week 3 is in the books and the season have just gotten cranked up. This week saw a full schedule of games for both leagues so while there are still six total teams that haven’t reached the ten-game played mark yet, suffice it say that league play is full speed ahead at this point. Jimmy Collins, Player-Manager 1901 Boston Americans There have been quite a few roster adjustments already and most teams have commenced with making lineups manipulations as well to try and improve performance. Most of the roster adjustments are around the fact that some teams are still scrambling to assemble a roster following the raids on National League players from American League teams this past winter. All teams are carrying a very thin bench as well, so any injury, even for a few days, is problematic as well. Chicago (AL) and Pittsburgh has set the standard so far and both have early leads in each of their leagues. Both teams feature solid pitching and good hitting and both teams have had...

Preparation, Part 2

I didn't intend to wait this long before starting my 1901 replay, but I was interrupted by a couple of house projects and work-related issues. Most of that is behind me, plus winter is here, so I am finally ready to light the fires on this replay. Now that part one ( link ) of the replay set-up is complete it is on to step two: reviewing the player transactions and making additional card adjustments in the area of errors. Baseball-Reference.com (BBR) includes listings of major league debuts, major league finales, as well as a list of player movement that occurred before, during, and after the season. The ATMgr player transaction file comes with its own list of player transactions during the season, most of which overlap with what BBR has. The three BBR listings were dumped into a spreadsheet, their formats massaged so they could be lumped into a single file, and then additional tweaking was completed so the BBR file could be merged in with the ATMgr file. Now it was t...
