In the AL, Chicago
continues to play well and any stumble that second-place Boston makes is
therefore somehow amplified, plus third-place Detroit, in the middle of a nine-game winning streak has drawn to within three games of second place. The
Tigers knocked around the second division for most of the first half of the
season but have suddenly had their pitching and hitting come together as they
have made their charge up the standings. Baltimore is still holding on to
fourth place, but their cracks are starting to show as they still have three
starters disabled.
Pittsburgh now has a
5.5 game lead over Philadelphia as the Phillies and third place Brooklyn took
turns knocking each other down in the standings this past week. Fourth place
Boston will go as far as their pitching will take them, but they have won eight
of their last ten and have climbed over the .500 mark and are hoping to not
fall backward over the remainder of the season.

Nap Lajoie (.433)
continues to lead the AL in hitting, just ahead of Sam Dungan (.399). Lajoie is
not second in homeruns (10) behind Pop Foster (11), but Lajoie continues to
lead in runs (69) and RBI's (84). John Anderson leads in hits (136) and doubles
(41) over Lajoie (132 and 28)
In the NL, Kip
Selbach (.393) has a slight lead over Jesse Burkett (.392) even though Burkett
has a wide lead in hits (145). Ed Delahanty leads in runs (66) and RBI's (64),
although both of these categories are quite tight. Bobby Wallace and Delahanty
both have 24 doubles, and Burkett and Bill Dahlen both lead with seven
homeruns.
A few more days and
we will be in August, and even though the schedule does extend into October
there are a lot of teams that have a lot of games left to play in the next two
months. A quick glance at the upcoming shows that even Baltimore should be at the
80-games-played mark by the end of next week due to the inclusion of two
doubleheaders.
