Week 23 Summary

Honus Wagner

Week 23 is in the books and after several very busy weeks, this one was relatively slow with less than 40 games played. The action will pick back up in Week 24 as the AL finishes its season and the NL dwindles down to its final remaining games in Week 25. The White Stockings have a magic number of one, so their clinching of the AL pennant is pretty much inevitable, but Pittsburgh's magic number is still at ten as they just can't pull away from Brooklyn. Those two teams played two games this upcoming week, so if Brooklyn does want to make a move it will have its opportunity.

Christy Mathewson
There were 31 players and managers from the 1901 season that made the Hall-of-Fame (I apologize if I missed anyone) including two, Christy Mathewson and Honus Wagner, that went in as part of the inaugural class of 1936. Obviously, most of these selected were selected by "Old Timers Committee's", but that makes no difference to me - they're in. I do read articles from time to time about players that don’t deserve to in the Hall of Fame. Fine. Whatever. I just think it is kind of demeaning to all involved. These players put in their time and effort, devoted their youth to the game we love, were at least pretty good players anyway, so let's let them have their moment. I don’t think that is too much to ask.

No long write-up this week. It's pretty much all over but the shouting as it is and my thoughts have been around what to include on a final end-of-season note. More to come - we're almost there.

1901 World Series and Finale

World Series Game One, Tuesday, October 8, 1901 The heat of the long hot Chicago summer had broken just in time for the commencement of the inaugural World Series and it was a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at South Side Park in Chicago. The home team, the Chicago White Stockings, had not played an official game in ten days, but were happy for the time off and were happy to have catcher Billy Sullivan back and able to play after his finger injury in the last week of the season plus pitcher Roy Patterson had rejoined the club after he had been allowed to return home before the end of the season. The visitors, the Pittsburgh Pirates, had just completed their regular season two days previous, but were happy for the day off on Monday and were ready to go as well. South Side Park, Chicago IL There was a concern as to whether this event would ever happen as both the leagues were still at war with each other, but both leagues, both teams, and the players all saw an opportunit...

Preparation, Part 2

I didn't intend to wait this long before starting my 1901 replay, but I was interrupted by a couple of house projects and work-related issues. Most of that is behind me, plus winter is here, so I am finally ready to light the fires on this replay. Now that part one ( link ) of the replay set-up is complete it is on to step two: reviewing the player transactions and making additional card adjustments in the area of errors. Baseball-Reference.com (BBR) includes listings of major league debuts, major league finales, as well as a list of player movement that occurred before, during, and after the season. The ATMgr player transaction file comes with its own list of player transactions during the season, most of which overlap with what BBR has. The three BBR listings were dumped into a spreadsheet, their formats massaged so they could be lumped into a single file, and then additional tweaking was completed so the BBR file could be merged in with the ATMgr file. Now it was t...

Week 7 Summary

Week 7 is in the books and the season has reached the month of June. The pennant races are still bunched up with a lot of churn seen in the middle of the pack, but Pittsburgh and Boston remain atop of the standings in their respective leagues. Each league still has two teams that haven’t reached the thirty games played mark yet, the two at the top in the AL and two of the three at the bottom in the NL. The AL has surpassed the NL in the number of games played, despite the NL getting a week head start on their new compatriots. Both leagues have started their eastern and western swings and at this point, the only teams that haven’t face each other yet are Baltimore and Cleveland, which will get fixed immediately when Week 8 commences. 1901 New York Ginats In the AL, Boston is fifth in the league in hitting and fourth in ERA, but thanks to Cy Young's 9-0 start and 0.89 ERA they enjoy a comfortable 4.5 game lead. Baltimore is second in the league in hitting and ERA and has man...
